You don't have to figure this out alone. Here's how we walk through it together.
Here’s a step-by-step look at Ensemble’s therapeutic process for Children’s therapy in AUstin, TX.
Step 1: 15-Minute Phone Consultation
Our intake coordinator will have a brief discussion with you about your needs to determine if therapy is a good fit for your family and to decide which therapist or service would be most appropriate. You schedule this by completing the contact form. If you have not yet done so, please do that first!
Step 2: 45-Minute Initial Consultation (adults only)
We will go over detailed background information about your child and family, learn about your current parenting successes and areas of growth, review practice policies, and set goals for your child’s therapeutic work.
Step 3: Pre-Treatment Assessments
After discussing therapeutic goals, our therapists might consult with school personnel and/or other healthcare providers (primary care physician, psychologist, psychiatrist, neurologist, etc.), conduct an informal observation at school or home, and ask parents to complete assessment questionnaires. Learn more about assessments here.
Step 4: Therapy Sessions with Your Child
Research supports that by providing a safe, predictable, reparative, and relational experience it allows children to fully explore and express themselves. The consistency of weekly sessions is important, and each session will be 45 minutes.
Step 5: Parent Consultations
In addition to working with your child weekly, we will provide you with new tools for your “parenting toolbox” that fit your child’s needs every 4-6 sessions.
Step 6: Follow-Up Recommendations
Research tells us that most children need around 20 play therapy sessions, about 6 months of weekly visits, before the challenges that brought them to us begin to shift. Every child's timeline looks a little different (some move through it faster, others need more time for deeper or longer-standing struggles), and we'll walk that path together. After this first season of work, we'll sit down and talk through what feels like the right next step for your family.
These could be:
Continued therapy
Parenting/Caregiver Support
Classroom Observations
Psychological Testing
School Consultation
Family Therapy Sessions
Parenting Workshops
Occupational Therapy

We start every relationship the same way: by getting to know your child from their perspective, because they're the expert on their own world. Research tells us that relationship itself is what creates change, so our first job is building a connection where your child feels safe enough to show us their real wishes, wants, and needs. Every child is motivated differently, so we spend those early sessions simply noticing how your child moves through the world, and what's underneath the behavior we're seeing.
Here's the simple truth: every one of us needs connection. It's foundational to who we are, long before we can grow into anything else.
Children don't come into this world with bad intentions. So when we see a behavior that looks disruptive or confusing, we try to look underneath it instead of just reacting to it. Often, what looks like acting out is really a child looking for connection in the only way they know how right now.
Sometimes a child seeks attention, because they want to feel noticed and like they belong. What helps: involving them and letting them feel useful.
Sometimes a child seeks a sense of control, because they're learning, growing, and want to feel capable. What helps: letting them help, and giving them real choices.
Sometimes a child pulls away or lashes out, because they're hurting and don't feel like they belong. Pushing away the people closest to us can feel safer than risking rejection. What helps: staying present, and letting them know their feelings are valid.
Sometimes a child seems to give up before they even try, because it feels safer not to be expected to succeed. What helps: not giving up on them, and showing them one small step at a time.
Our first goal, always, is safety. Once your child feels safe with us, we can gently explore what's really going on underneath.
From there, we meet with you as the parent to share what we're noticing and offer tools that work at home, at school, and in session. Together, we'll decide what comes next, whether that's continued sessions, further assessment, parent coaching, school consultation, or family therapy.

Family therapy brings one or more family members into the room together: opening up communication, learning new ways of connecting, repairing old ruptures, and problem-solving as a family.
We know that sounds wonderful, and if you've read this far, you're probably ready to start there. After all, we just told you that healing happens in community, and that includes you.
Here's the thing though: at Ensemble Therapy, we spend those first sessions building a safe, secure relationship between your child and their clinician. That foundation matters. It's what makes everything that follows possible.
During this time, we're also getting to know your child's strengths and the ways they've learned to cope with stress and conflict (some strategies more helpful than others). Every child arrives with their own toolbox, filled with what they've picked up along the way, and it takes a little time to sort through what's inside.
Here's what we promise: the moment your child is ready to thrive in family therapy, we'll be just as ready to invite you in.
