The Whatifs by Emily Kilgore

Appropriate Age Range: 4-8 years

What this book is all about:

Cora has a lot of negative “what if” monsters in her head leading up to her piano recital. These “what if” monsters follow her around and make her feel anxious. With the help of a new friend named Stella, Cora is able to turn these what ifs into positive what ifs. Cora ends the recital, even after a mistake, to thunderous applause and a new friend.

Why you might want to read it:

This book is a wonderful example of how our thoughts can impact us and how to reframe our what ifs in a positive way. What if...you really enjoy this book!

4 questions for you to ask your children after reading it:

  1. Cora’s what ifs followed her around from the moment she woke up. What are some what ifs that follow you around?

  2. Cora felt better after she talked with Stella. Who is someone that you can talk to when you are feeling anxious?

  3. Some people get an upset stomach when they get worried. What do you notice about your body when you start to worry about something?

  4. When we feel anxious, it is good for kids and adults to have things to do that help us feel better. The activities we do to feel better are called coping skills, like going for a walk or taking a break. Cora took a deep breath and tried to ignore some of those negative thoughts. What are some coping skills that you like to use? Help your child with some suggestions and things that you do to feel better when you are anxious.
