Colleen Turner is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). Colleen received her Master of Science in Social Work degree from the University of Texas at Austin and her Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies from the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign. Colleen is currently working towards her Registered Play Therapist™ (RPT™) credential. Colleen has clinical experience working with children ages zero through elementary school and their families and has worked extensively with children impacted by the child welfare system. Colleen is a Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) Educator trained by the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development at Texas Christian University. Colleen has clinical experience working with children and adolescents, two to 16 years old. Colleen takes a whole-family, attachment-based, and trauma-informed approach to therapy, acknowledging that the family system is the most salient in a child’s life and can also be the source of the most support and healing.

Colleen is originally from Illinois but moved to Austin for the better weather (no dreary winters and icy roads!) and the outdoor and dog friendly vibes. Colleen has called Austin home for more than a decade.

With children ages three years through elementary school with explosive or otherwise externalized behaviors (throwing, hitting, yelling, slamming doors)
Who are interested in the idea of parents working alongside the child’s play therapy sessions (since you know your child best!)
Who value Colleen’s experience in working with children who have experienced adverse childhood experiences ranging from parental divorce to abuse or neglect and the fact that she is trained in Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI), which is a parenting model designed for caregivers of children who have been traumatized

Favorite board game: Taboo!... even though there isn’t an actual board

Favorite animal: All wild and jungle cats — jaguars, panthers, lynxes, cheetahs, lions, tigers, the list goes on!
Favorite children’s book: Way too many to choose from! I loved the Velveteen Rabbit as a small child and recently re-read The Giver which was one of my favorite 5th grade reads.

I feel happiest when: When I can be in the sun and have had a full night’s rest and a workout that day.
